Hue is Vietnam's former imperial capital, known for the Citadel, the Nguyen dynasty royal tombs, and central Vietnamese cooking. From Da Nang the drive usually takes 2–2.5 hours; from Hoi An allow 3–3.5 hours each way. Because it is a long day, start early and pick a small number of meaningful stops.
What time should you leave?
Pickup at 06:30 from Da Nang or 06:00 from Hoi An. That gets you into the Citadel before the crowds, leaves time for lunch, and returns you before late evening. From Hoi An an overnight in Hue is more comfortable — but a private car does make the day trip workable.

The Hai Van Pass is a beautiful stop between Da Nang and Hue, especially on a clear morning. Allow an extra 30–45 minutes for photos and coffee. In rain or fog the Hai Van tunnel is usually the faster and safer option.
Tip: Bring comfortable shoes, water, and a light rain jacket. The Citadel is large and Hue's weather can change quickly with the season.
